Cohort Definition

As of 12/4/2017

Patient inclusion criteria

Patients are included in the cohort that meet the following criteria:

  • Age > 18 years at index date AND
  • With a prescription or fill for one or more of the following cohort-specific medications: Drug A (abaloparatide), Prolia (denosumab), Drug B (teriparatide)
  • New/recent users, which are defined as patients with no prior treatment of the same drug in the previous 12 months.

Drug A approval date as index date

In order to provide a suitable comparison across all medicated patients, the index date for all patients must be on or after 1 May 2017 (i.e. after the date of approval date for Drug A).

New or recent users of Prolia and Drug B are defined as patients who had a prescription or fill of either medication on or after 1 May 2017, AND had at least one non-administrative encounter at least 12 months prior to the index date (defined as the earliest start date of either drug on or after I May 2017), AND no prior treatment of the same drug (prolia or Drug B, respectively) in the previous 12 months prior to the index date.

  • Mean Age in Years. Average age of patients on the medications of interest on or after the index date up through the end of the data.
  • Age distribution by medication. Breakdown of the mean age of patients by the medication of interest as of the index date.
  • Mean age by medication. Breakdown of the proportion of patients by age group for each medication of interest as of the index date.
  • Age distribution. Proportion of patients out of the total number of patients by age group across all the medications of interest after the index date.

  • Sex distribution. Proportion of patients out of the total number of patients by sex across all the medications of interest after the index date up through the end of the data.
  • Sex distribution by medication. Proportion of each sex of the patients initiating each medication of interest after the index data through the date of cutoff.
  • Percent menopausal. Proportion of patients on the medications of interest who are menopausal on or after the index date up through the date of cutoff. Menopausal is defined as patients who have a diagnosis code indicating menopause, history of bilateral oopherectomy/post-procedural ovarian failure, or are over age 55 at index date.
  • Menopausal distribution by medication. Proportion of patients on each medication of interest out of the total patients on that medication who are menopausal. Menopausal is defined as patients who have a diagnosis code indicating menopause, history of bilateral oopherectomy/post-procedural ovarian failure, or are over age 55 at index date.

  • Race distribution. Proportion of patients across all medications of interest. Those patients who has a race provided other than Caucasian, African American or Asian are categorized as Other.
  • Race distribution by medication. Breakdown of patient race for each medication of interest. Those patients who has a race provided other than Caucasian, African American or Asian are categorized as Other.

  • Mean body weight. Mean body weight of patients on the medications of interest on or after the index date up through the end of the data.
  • Body weight distribution by medication. Mean body weight by medication of interest of the patients on each medication on or after the index date up through the end of the data.
  • Mean BMI. Mean body mass index of patients on the medications of interest on or after the index date up through the end of the data. The body mass index is calculated based on patient weight and height values.
  • BMI distribution by medication. Mean body mass index by medication of interest of the patients on each medication on or after the index date up through the end of the data. The body mass index is calculated based on patient weight and height values.
  • BMI category distribution. Distribution of the BMI categories of patients across all medications of interest. BMI categories are: Underweight: below 18.5, Normal: 18.5-24.9, Overweight: 25.0-29.9 , Obese: 30.0 and above
  • BMI category distribution by medication. Distribution of the BMI categories by each medication. BMI categories are: Underweight: below 18.5, Normal: 18.5-24.9, Overweight: 25.0-29.9 , Obese: 30.0 and above

  • Distribution by U.S. census division. Proportion of patients for each census division of the US who initiated any of the medications of interest on or after the index date through the date of cutoff. Regions are defined per the US Census Bureau. Puerto Rico and other US territories are categorized as Other.
  • Medication by U.S. census division. Breakdown of patients for each U.S. census division of the US who initiated each of the medications of interest on or after the index date through the date of cutoff. Regions are defined per the US Census Bureau. Puerto Rico and other US territories are categorized as Other.
Insurance Type

 Additional Information
  • Insurance for patients across all medications of interest. Medicare patients are those who have an indication from a claim or from an EMR of being on Medicare at any time prior to the index date. All other patients are categorized as Commercial, Medicaid or Other based on their coverage closest to the index date. Patients with no insurance information are categorized as Unknown.
  • The proportion insurance for patients for each medication of interest. Medicare patients are those who have an indication from a claim or from an EMR of being on Medicare at any time prior to the index date. All other patients are categorized as Commercial, Medicaid or Other based on their coverage closest to the index date. Patients with no insurance information are categorized as Unknown.
